Understanding Your Lead Water Service Line Notification Letter

LSL Not 1

Why am I receiving this letter?

Under new rules, the EPA now requires water systems to notify customers annually if they are served by known or potential lead service line. The information in the letter is required verbiage set by the EPA.  It is meant to explain the health risks of lead exposure, share simple precautions that can be taken to minimize any, and where to find more information about lead safety.

The letter does not mean that lead is present in your drinking water. When water leaves the Sheboygan water treatment plant, it does not have measurable levels of lead in it. However, most homes constructed prior to the 1950’s have a lead water service line leading from the public water main into the home. If water sits in a lead water lateral for a period of time, it can dissolve some of the lead. Solder used in plumbing prior to the 1980’s also had lead, which can also be a contributing factor within a home.

The Sheboygan Water Utility uses an approved phosphate treatment additive to coat lead service lines and thus reduces the possibility of lead or copper dissolving in the water.

As required by US EPA and WI DNR, the Utility routinely tests water in residences for lead and content to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The Sheboygan Water Utility has not exceeded the action level for lead in drinking water. Our annual consumer confidence report can be found HERE.

What is a service line?

The pipe that connects your indoor plumbing to the water main in the street is called a service line. In the City of Sheboygan, service lines are owned and must be maintained by the property owner.

How can I have my water tested for lead?

Homeowners can test the lead content in their drinking water by contacting a certified lab. A listing of certified labs can be found here: DNR Link https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/labCert/certified-lab-lists
