Learn About Lead

Lead can come from many sources beyond lead service lines. It exists naturally in our environment — including the air, soil, and water — and can also be present inside homes. Much of today’s exposure is linked to past human activities such as the historical use of leaded gasoline, certain industrial processes, and lead-based paint in older buildings. Lead and lead compounds were widely used in everyday products, including paint, ceramics, plumbing materials, solder, batteries, ammunition, and some cosmetics. Understanding these potential sources helps customers take informed steps to reduce overall exposure.
